Know anyone who has been exhausted lately and complaining of a swollen, sore throat? Mono could be the cause. Centra Care physicians have seen recent dramatic increases in cases of Mono.
The greatest increases of reported cases have been seen at the following Centra Care locations:
Winter Garden Village: up 200%
Azalea Park, Colonial Town, Conway, Oviedo, and Waterford Lakes: up 100%
Infectious mononucleosis is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. The virus passes through saliva, which is why it’s sometimes called the “kissing disease.”
Mono can also be spread by coughing or sneezing or sharing food or beverages from the same container or utensil. Mono is most often diagnosed in adolescents and young adults, however, you can get it at any age.
Symptoms of mono include:
- Sore Throat
- Swollen Lymph Glands
All Centra Care locations have a rapid test available on-site to diagnose mono. Typically, most people get better within a few weeks, but Mono can last for months.
Treatment focuses on improving symptoms and includes medicines for pain and fever, warm saltwater gargles and plenty of rest and fluids. Serious complications are rare.
