Allergies are up. Colds are spreading fast around area schools. Flu season is upon us. What does all that add up to? A high risk of attack for asthma sufferers.
Last week, area Centra Care locations saw a 100% increase from the previous week in the number of pediatric patients with asthma-related complaints.
Asthma can be dangerous and should never be ignored. It is a disease of the airways, that creates inflammation and spasm of the breathing tubes, making breathing more difficult and causes wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath. A “trigger” usually brings on asthma attacks.
Asthma Triggers Include:
- Respiratory Infections
- Animals (pet hair or dander)
- Tobacco Smoke
The goals of asthma treatment are to establish normal lung function, relieve symptoms and prevent asthma flare-ups. There is no cure for asthma, although symptoms may decrease over time. It is important to identify and avoid the allergens or causes that trigger your asthma. Your doctor may prescribe medications based on your condition. If you or your child has been prescribed daily asthma medication, it is very important to not skip a dosage, even if you’re not having symptoms.
Breathing treatments for adults and children are available at all Centra Care locations with no appointment necessary.
