It may not be contagious, but Asthma can be dangerous

Seasonal allergies, complications of the common cold…even stress can trigger an asthma attack. Those triggers have been fierce lately among the youngest asthma sufferers in Central Florida, as shown in the latest Centra Care data. The urgent care locations have seen a significant increase in pediatric asthma patients in the last week.

Asthma can be dangerous and should never be ignored. It’s a disease of the airways that creates inflammation and spasm of the breathing tubes – making breathing more difficult and causing wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath.

Nebulizer therapy is available at all 22 Centra Care locations. A nebulizer changes liquid medication to a mist, which is particularly effective in administering asthma medication to infants and young children.

A Centra Care doctor will diagnose asthma based on medical history, a physical exam and test results. Tests may include a lung function test and a chest X-Ray.

The goals of asthma treatment are to establish normal lung function, relieve symptoms, and prevent asthma flare-ups. There is no cure for asthma, although symptoms may decrease over time. It is important to identify and avoid your specific asthma triggers. Medications may be prescribed.
