Blame the beautiful weather — who wants to stay inside? Maybe fall sports can take some of the hit, too. Whatever the reason, Centra Care physicians have seen quite a jump in the number of kids with fractures this week, and most of the breaks have been below the belt. Data shows that lower extremity fractures are up 350% from the previous week.

Typical symptoms of a fractured bone are pain, swelling, bruising, and sometimes deformity at the site of injury. If the broken bone punctures the skin, it is called an open or compound fracture. A fracture is sometimes difficult to diagnose just on symptoms alone. Just because you can bend or move the injured arm or leg, doesn’t mean it’s not broken. To avoid further injury, always get an x-ray of any traumatic injury (fall, twist, or sprain) so that the proper treatment can begin right away. Every Centra Care location is equipped with x-ray on site.

Seek medical attention right away for any possible fracture. You may need to wear a cast or splint. Sometimes surgery is even needed.
