Flu Season: Too Soon?

Even though the 2017-2018 flu season are months behind us, the impact of this very busy season is still with us. Too soon do we forget the medication shortages of Tamiflu or the many tragic losses of those who died from influenza or its related complications.

In fact, last season Centra Care alone treated well over 10,000 flu patients.

So how do we prepare?

1. Don’t assume that just because last season was particularly active, we will have a quiet season this year. The 2017-2018 season started off rather mild but quickly ramped up at the start of the new year.

2. Additionally, flu strains change and fluctuate year over year, with new dominate strains coming into foreground. What was dominate last season may be completely different or impact the public in a different way as the new season progresses.

3. That said, it’s highly important to receive a flu shot as soon as the current season’s vaccinations are available. Particularly because it takes about 2 weeks for the flu vaccine to fully be effective.

Other preventative steps can be taken to safeguard your family against the flu. These include:

Hand Washing: Not only should you focus on proper hand washing techniques but also keep in mind that drying them off is just as important. According to the CDC, wet hands are more likely to spread germs than dry ones.
Sleep: Believe it or not, maintaining a routine helps keep your body and health stay in tune. Not getting enough sleep may compromise your immune system.
Exercise: Whether you’re a solo runner or stay active as a family, getting regular exercise boosts your immune system which helps fight off sickness.
Cover Up: Keep your coughs & sneezes to yourself by using a tissue or the upper part of your arm.
Stay Home: Anytime you or a little one are feeling ill, stay home. It’s also best to avoid those you know are sick.

Regardless what part of the flu season cycle you’re in, Centra Care is there for families 7-days a week. From flu vaccines, diagnosis, to anti-viral medication, Centra Care is your flu season headquarters.
