Ebola in headlines, but flu is bigger worry

Orlando SentinelEbola has grabbed national headlines in recent weeks, but it’s the time of year when people should be more worried about the flu.

Though Ebola’s risk to the general public is low, “we shouldn’t forget that there are many viruses that cause illnesses and sometimes death in Central Florida every year,” said Dr. Vincent Hsu, Florida Hospital’s infection-prevention director. “So don’t neglect the flu shot,” Hsu said.

There’s no telling how the flu season will unfold, but so far, “it has been mimicking the last couple of seasons,” said Dr. Jonathan Schwartzman, associate medical director of Centra Care, which has 21 centers in Central Florida. “There’s a gradual peak, and we’re slowly seeing more and more cases.” [Read full story]
