Backpack Safety

When it comes to school health, be aware that backpacks can cause severe back pain – especially for the little ones who carry books from class to class.

Here are some tips to avoid an aching back:

  • Use both shoulder straps and tighten the straps so that the backpack is close to the body to help distribute the weight, rather than having one strap slung over the shoulder.
  • A backpack should not weigh more than 15% of a child’s weight.
  • Pack heavier items towards the center.
  • Utilize all compartments. It will help deter back, neck, and shoulder pain, as will as posture problems.
